Why Trust or Build Trust?

It seems like everyday the newspaper refers to the problem we have with “trust” today in our society. At the business, political and even religious level trust seems at an all-time low.

Why do we value trust and what are the benefits of knowing how to bring it into our lives?

Jack Gibb (1978) talked about trust saying,

“It is something very much like love, and its presence or absence can make a powerful difference in our lives.”(Gibb, 1978, p.14).

  • Dr. Ron Hofsess has spent over 17 years teaching about building Interpersonal Trust Communities.

  • He notes the benefits of trust in his workbook Choosing to Create Communities of Trust.

  • He states that interpersonal trust communities can increase:

    • health and wellness;

    • personal growth;

    • emotional support;

    • spontaneity;

    • risk-taking;

    • discovery of self and others;

    • team-building; and

    • problem-solving potential.

His review of literature includes reference of how trust has eroded among American workers leading to in some cases increased turnover and consequent negative effects on companies. (See Dr. Hofsess' resume and Resources for more information.Not having trust personally and in business communities can have high costs.)
